It is one of the three big festivals in Tokyo; the Sanno features an elegant parade of ox- drawn carriages, mikoshi (portable shrines). Almost 500 people splendidly dressed in Imperial Court costumes take part in this festival.
The parade starts from the edge of the Imperial Palace, circles it and continues for three kilometers down to the Ginza and Kyobashi, with Shinto priests offering prayers for peace along the way.
This much- awaited cultural event is held in even- numbered years, alternating with the Kanda Festival.
A series of events held in this season at Hie Jinja shrine is generally called “Sanno Festival”, which includes the annual festival of the shrine, Jinko- sai parade etc.
It is counted among the three greatest festivals in Japan together with Tenjin Festival in Osaka and Gion Festival in Kyoto also known as the head of three major festivals in Tokyo.
The entry to the festival is free.
Hours: Vary.
