Opened in 1952, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo as the first national museum of art in Japan. The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo consists of the Museum and Crafts Gallery in Kitanomaru Koen. The museum is near the Imperial Palace and the National Film Center in Kyobashi, which is next to Ginza.

The activities are undertaken with the view of providing a systematic overview of modern Japanese art within the context of modern art all over the world and widely promoting an interest in art.

They organize permanent exhibitions providing historical views of the diverse development of fine art and craftwork in Japan during 20th century. The exhibitions based on different themes and issues.
The National Film Center shows films under specific themes focusing for example, on a particular director, period or region. The exhibition catalogues are published to provide further understanding of the works and newsletters.

HOURS: 10:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. (Admission until 4:30p.m.)
Art Museum is open until 8:00 p.m. every Friday (Admission until 7:30p.m.)
Mondays (open on holiday Mondays and close on the following days),
